Jeep Cherokee vs Grand Cherokee

Jeep Cherokee vs Grand Cherokee Somerset MA

There are few experiences quite like driving a brand new SUV or crossover. Most modern models will have generous interior space, along with stunning performance, that will make you feel powerful on the road. These models also happen to be among the most popular, so there are quite a few options to choose from. Fortunately, two tend to stand out, especially if you’re interested in off-road performance.

When it comes to off-road capability, there’s nothing better than the off-roading masters at Jeep. The Jeep lineup has many versatile options that can be tailored to your needs, and there are no two better examples than the Jeep Cherokee and the Jeep Grand Cherokee. These two crossover SUVs have all-around appeal for adventurers and families alike, but they do have some differences to consider.

Drivers in Somerset and New Bedford can determine the important differences between the popular Jeep models with our Jeep Cherokee vs. Jeep Grand Cherokee comparison.

Off-Road Capability

Jeep Cherokee Off-Road CapabilitySince both of these vehicles are manufactured by Jeep, you can be sure that they can handle off-road challenges. If you want to get the most out of your SUV’s capability, however, make sure you opt for the Trailhawk® trim available on each vehicle. The respective Trailhawk® trims are the only ones for each model that have earned the prestigious Trail Rated® badge, which is only awarded after conquering a series of grueling off-road tests.

One of the best features available in both models is the Selec-Terrain® Management System. With this system, you can swap to different driving modes on the fly with options for snow, sport, sand/mud, and rock. You’ll also find tow hooks available on both, along with generous ground clearance. The 2019 Grand Cherokee offers a unique feature, however, called the anti-glare decal. This allows you to spot obstacles more clearly, even if the sun directly faces your front windshield.

The 2019 Jeep Cherokee is equipped with a 2.4-liter inline-four engine producing 184 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque, mated to a nine-speed automatic transmission. The Grand Cherokee comes with a 3.6-liter V6 providing 295 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque, mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Additional powertrains are available for both vehicles, but the power remains firmly in favor of the Grand Cherokee. In fact, its supercharged 6.2-liter V8 engine boasts a best-in-class 707 horsepower with 645 lb-ft of torque.

Both offer four-wheel drive and can be outfitted for off-roading or towing. The Cherokee boasts a 2,000-pound towing capacity, which is more than enough for light recreational towing requirements, and the 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee tows up to 6,200 pounds. With either vehicle, you’ll enjoy a smooth ride, car-like handling, and strong, reliable braking.

Though known for capability, the Grand Cherokee and Cherokee offer upscale cabins with plenty of space and comfort. Five passengers can sit comfortably in supportive seats with an abundance of headroom and legroom, and improvements including leather upholstery and heated seats further enhance the comfort. Both even offer additional features like a panoramic dual-pane sunroof and premium sound system. The only difference is that the Cherokee features an Alpine system with nine speakers, while the larger Grand Cherokee features a 19-speaker Harman Kardon® system.

Diving into the dimensions themselves, it’s easy to see the generous interior space in both vehicles. When you’re behind the wheel of the Cherokee, you’ll have 39.4 inches of headroom and 41.1 inches of legroom. The Grand Cherokee, on the other hand, offers more headroom with 39.9 inches, but less legroom with 40.3 inches. Your rear passengers will prefer the Cherokee as well, with 40.3 inches of legroom compared to the Grand Cherokee’s 38.6 inches. It’s important to remember, however, that the Grand Cherokee can hold up to seven passengers, while the Cherokee maxes out at five.

Both vehicles can handle your cargo needs, as well. The Cherokee offers 25.8 cubic feet behind the rear seat, which expands to 54.9 cubic feet when the seats are folded. Being the larger of the two, the Grand Cherokee provides 36.3 cubic feet behind the rear seats and 68.3 cubic feet with folded seats. A power liftgate is available for both, and the Grand Cherokee offers cargo tie-down loops for more cargo flexibility.

Jeep Cherokee | Somerset MAThe Cherokee and Grand Cherokee use many of the same technology features: Both have a rearview camera, Hill Start Assist, and the Uconnect® infotainment system with Apple CarPlay™ and Android Auto™ smartphone integration. These additions give you the safety and entertainment you need for any driving situation. Regardless of the touchscreen size, the Uconnect® system boasts sharp graphics, an intuitive interface, and plenty of third-party app compatibility.

Several advanced safety features are available for the Cherokee and Grand Cherokee, including Blind Spot Monitoring, Forward Collision Warning, and Automatic Braking. The technology uses sensors to monitor the area around your vehicle and alert you to a potential collision, and will apply the brakes or steering to guide you back to safety. Additionally, both vehicles offer blind spot warnings that will alert you if a vehicle currently occupies your blind spot. This same technology can also be used as a Rear Cross-Traffic Alert that will warn you of oncoming traffic when you back out of a parking spot.
