2021 Jeep Cherokee MPG Review

Jeep Cherokee Performance and Engines

The Cherokee base engine is a 2.4-liter four-cylinder that puts out 180 horsepower and 171 lb-ft of torque. The upgrades include an available 3.2-liter V6 that nets you 271 horsepower and 239 lb-ft of torque and an available 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that boasts 270 horsepower and 295 lb-ft of torque.

All engines mate to a nine-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive, though several four-wheel-drive systems are offered. Depending on the trim you choose, you can have the Active Drive I, Active Drive II, or Active Drive Lock four-wheel systems, all of which use advanced traction management with selectable drive modes for conditions like rain, snow, ice, mud, and more.

The Cherokee mpg varies according to the powertrain you choose. The four-cylinder engine with front-wheel drive offers an EPA-estimated 22 mpg on city streets and 31 mpg on highways. The front-wheel-drive turbo-four engine gets an EPA-estimated 23 mpg in city driving and 31 mpg with highway driving. Those numbers slightly change to an EPA-estimated 21 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway with four-wheel drive.

The V6 engine gets an EPA-estimated 20 mpg in the city and 29 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. With four-wheel drive from the Active Drive Lock system, the fuel economy is an EPA-estimated 18 mpg in the city and 24 mpg on the highway.
