Warning Symbols vs Indicator Lights
Your Jeep's dashboard will show two types of lights: warning symbols and indicators. Warning symbols warn drivers when an area of the vehicle needs to be tended to. Indicators illuminate when your vehicle is performing a certain action, like setting your cruise control speed, for instance.
Warning Symbols
While there are many important warning symbols your Cherokee can show, the following are the most common and the most important to keep an eye out for:
Malfunction Indicator Warning Light (MIL)
This engine-shaped light (also known as the Check Engine Light) pops up on the dash when your vehicle is experiencing issues with its engine or emissions system. However, this light can illuminate for various other reasons as well. With that being said, you'll want to bring in your vehicle for maintenance as soon as possible.
Tire Pressure Monitoring System (TPMS) Warning Light
Whether you're experiencing a climate shift or you recently ran over something on the road, this horseshoe-shaped light with an exclamation point in the middle may show up on the dashboard. This warning symbol points to improper inflation in one or more of your tires.
Oil Pressure Warning Light
Has your vehicle been experiencing engine issues? Is it time for your Cherokee's next oil change? If so, you may notice an oil can symbol on the dashboard. This symbol is indicative of low oil levels.
If this light illuminates, it's best to schedule a service appointment with us as soon as possible to avoid engine damage.
Indicators
Your Jeep Cherokee also has a slew of indicators that will pop up regularly. Some of the most common indicators can be:Turn Signal Indicator Lights

Every time you engage your turn signals, a green left or right arrow will blink on the dash. If you notice the speed of the blink turns rapid, this could mean one of the outside light bulbs is or will be inoperative.
Cruise Control Ready Indicator Light

If you spend lots of time driving long distances, you're probably familiar with cruise control. When you engage the cruise control feature, a tachometer-like symbol will show up on the dashboard.
If you notice the tachometer symbol pops up with an exclamation point next to it, this can point to improper function and should be checked out when possible.
Safety System Indicators
Your Jeep Cherokee can equip various active safety systems. How do you know they're in use? Safety system indicators, of course! These lights will vary by system; however, they're usually green or white in color. You'll notice lights for these features:
- Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC)
- LaneSense
- Speed Warning
To see what those indicators look like, consult your owner's manual.
