The Compass comes with a 180-horsepower 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that mates to a 6-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard. The four-wheel-drive variant gets a 9-speed automatic transmission. Both transmissions deliver smooth, reliable shifts that optimize the Compass's power.

On the pavement, the Compass offers a smooth, cushioned ride quality that maximizes passenger comfort. The steering is well-weighted and provides plenty of feedback for driver confidence. You can also take the Compass off-road with the full-time four-wheel-drive system that boasts the Selec-Terrain® Traction Management System. This system allows you to adjust your driving mode for the road conditions, letting you choose from Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud settings. The off-road-specialized Trailhawk trim level includes an upgraded four-wheel-drive system with a Rock setting, hill descent control, skid plates, and two tow hooks.

The vehicle comes standard with a 7-inch touchscreen Uconnect® system that offers a responsive menu and a combination of touch inputs and physical knobs and buttons. Apple CarPlay® and Android Auto™ smartphone integration is standard for endless entertainment options.

Several safety features are on the offer, including automatic high-beam headlights and rain-sensing windshield wipers. You can also add forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a feature that alerts you to possible frontal crashes and applies the brakes automatically. Lane-departure warning is also available, which alerts you if you drift from your lane and gently guides you back to the center. Another option is adaptive cruise control, which adjusts your speed on the highway to stay with the flow of traffic and maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead.
